BIOGRAPHY
Rodrigo Petrella, was born in 1972, in São Paulo, Brazil.
In 1997 he graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from the University of São Paulo (USP).
He won his first camera at 13 years. "As long as I can remember, Ive always admired the history of photography and its pioneering artists. Maybe thats part of the reason I am so inexplicably charmed and facinated by the B & W photo."
Petrella has been a professional photographer since 1994 when he started photographing in Rio de Janeiro. He later moved to New York City, where he has worked in the fashion industry, including work for W Magazine, Vogue, Dutch, ID and with famous models such as Gisele Bundchen, as well as other personalities in the artisic business world. He continues to do work for international magazines and journals.
He returned to Brazil in 2001. Since then he has focused on two main subjects: a personal project exploring the symbols and images of our unconscious, and a photographic record of the daily life of indigenous communities in the Amazon.
From 2003 until this date Petrella has been devoted to photographing indigenous communities in partnership with COIAB (Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon). Using his Rolleiflex, in 6X6 format, his work features various indigenous groups in the states of Amazonas (Parintintin, Tenharin, Pirahã and Mura), Rondônia (Gavião, Cinta Larga and Suruí), Acre (Ashaninka, Kaxinawá, Kulina Mandijá and Shanenawa), Mato Grosso (Nambikwara do Campo, Mamaindê, Enawene-nawê, Pareci, Erikbaktsa and Kuikuro) and Pará (kayapó).
