Maria Carmen Perlingeiro was born in Rio de Janeiro, in 1952. Lives and works in Geneve. She was graduated in Belas Artes at the University of Rio de Janeiro, 1971; Ecole supérieur dâart visuel, Geneve, 1973; Pratt Institute, New York, 1982 and Art Studentsâ League, New York, 1983. She participated in many individual exhibitions in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo (Brazil) and in Geneve; she was also invited to show her works in group exhibitions as the XIII and XIV Bienal Internacional de São Paulo (1975 and 1977). In August of 1996, she received the first prize ex-æquo of the international artistic concourse for the building UNI Dufour, Darier Hentsch & Cie, Geneve. HerProjeto Vegetal, in collaboration with C. Beusch, M. Junod and A. Cooper, was selected among 249 projects, presented at the Mus&e dâart histoire, Geneve. About her sculptures, the Brazilian art critic Paulo Venâncio Filho wrote in Clepsydra: The work itself knows how to find its ways, as it knew before how to reach and face white, classical and austere marble and impoverish it through the poetry of the blade and the pellicle. That is, I believe, what happens in the work where an iron shaft crosses the alabasters ovals. The lie of that stone may seduce in excess and one must denounce it, even aggressively. In the same way I perceive another series of works, apparently so distant, as the result of distrustful actions. I refer to the sculptures of recognizable and identifiable objects: the slipper, the spade and the shoehorn, the pipe and the violin. Here is demonstrated the almost blatant improperty of representing those objects in the permanence of the stone, so banal are they. But in which material would we find them, other than the undefined and essential image that only alabaster supplies so that they reveal their proustian presences, immersed in the stone as if in limbo, representing a revival which was realized and remained as is.
